“I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for.” -Georgia O’Keefe
Be and Belong Counseling currently offers art therapy services for adults and children ages 12+. Our art therapist uses both directive and non-directive art therapy modalities and has training and experience in using art therapy to address a range of issues, including addressing trauma, building self-esteem, and improving emotional regulation.
Art therapy provides an additional route to healing and can be used in treating all ages. Our brains and bodies process and store information non-verbally, which can sometimes lead to challenges in benefiting from talk therapy alone. With the support of a trained art therapist, art therapy provides an opportunity to explore, process, and express thoughts, feelings, and experiences when words alone may not be sufficient. Artistic skill is not a requirement to benefit from art therapy.
Per the American Art Therapy Association, art therapy can be helpful to:
- Build self-awareness and self-esteem
- Cultivate emotional resilience
- Promote insight
- Reduce and resolve conflict and distress
- Enhance social skills
- Improve cognitive and sensorimotor functions
- Advance societal and ecological change
Visual expression is a natural form of communication for all ages. At Be and Belong, our art therapist is board certified through the Art Therapy Credentials Board. We are strong believers that ongoing supervision, consultation, and training supports our ability to do this work well and our art therapist is passionate about using art and creativity to help people navigate their nervous system and heal.
