So. There’s this thing… that happened a few weeks ago. And unlike most things, it has affected and upended ALL of our lives. There’s a collective grief and a togetherness as we all experience the unfolding of a global pandemic.
Maybe you are reading this as an adult suddenly working from home, rocking yoga pants and waist-up business attire for the next however-many-weeks. There could be dogs barking in the background, children arguing, the pressure of attending to school and the dog and WHY IS (insert partner’s name) CHEWING SO LOUD?? Maybe you’re in the bathroom, because it’s the only place you can find a quiet moment. Maybe the silence is deafening because you’ve been alone in your apartment for days. Maybe you’re an essential worker and wondering how you are going to get through the next few months.
So. There’s this thing, called COVID-19, and it’s affected all of our lives.
Never has the decision of whether to go to the grocery store felt so loaded. There are have been so many choices you have had to make in an unbearable short amount of time. There’s uncertainty, loneliness, anxiety, and it’s a lot. For every human being – this is a lot.
One thing we know at Be and Belong Counseling PLLC is that during times of physical distancing and quarantine, mental health care is more important than ever. We are all in our homes for the greater good of our physical bodies and our collective society, and it’s crucial to care for our mental health and our children’s mental health as well.
Maybe numbers can help: One study compared PTSD symptoms of parents and children quarantined with those not found that mean PTSD stress scores were four times higher* in children who had been quarantined. The additional studies we have read involve quarantine between 10-21 days… but what happens when kids and adults are isolated for longer periods of time?
There is fear and anxiety, loneliness and longing, but our hope is that it can be coupled with kindness, with gratitude, with self-compassion, and above all – hope. Let yourself hold on – to moment-to-moment hope, to the notion that you WILL get through this, to the truth that you can make decisions that will benefit you and those around you. That in this moment, you have everything you need. That you are not alone.
We are now offering secure HIPAA compliant counseling via video, called ‘telehealth.’ Please reach out for support today. We are designed to heal in relationship, and would be honored to be with you in this season (yoga pants, crying children, barking dogs, silence, and all).
Below is a list of resources to use as-needed to soothe your nervous system. Remember: when YOU are regulated, then you can lend your nervous system and calm state to your loved ones. You are the most important person in your world, and you are deserving of care.
